The night Elena’s parents died (also now known as the night Elena and Damon first met), Stefan saved Elena. Yes? Yes. Vampires, as Esther often says, are a form of going against nature- deferring things from the original order. They, and any other super natural being, are stopping destiny. It was Elena’s destiny to die that night with her parents, and it would have happened if Stefan hadn’t intervened. In the season three finale, that ‘mistake’ (although that’s a harsh way of phrasing it) was corrected. What was meant to happen, happened. It happened at a different date, in a different car, with different company, but Elena died in a car crash off the Wickery bridge nonetheless. But what I’ve really been thinking is: What if Stefan prevented fate in more ways than one? Stefan saving Elena is the whole reason he had an interest in her, and is therefore the whole reason S/E happened at all. We are now aware that Damon met Elena first, and that their connection was formed instantaneously. Stefan threw all of that off course, as in he intervened and prevented fate. Now in 3x22 we see one of Stefan’s infractions against destiny get corrected. What was meant to be, was. Damon and Elena were meant to be. And now maybe once nature corrects itself, they can be.

What if Elena was supposed to have a passionate, loving and consumming relationship with coach Tanner? Damon altered destiny by meeting her that night.
